This month I have such a wealth of info to cover that I’ve decided to write a column of “quick hits”. These are all items that I have come across browsing the Internet. Read on to find short notes about all the blips on my dance music radar screen this month…

A "Spinners" pictorial in the July 2003 Playboy uncovered 8 of the top international female DJ's including Atlanta's DJ Keri (Goddess). Famed photographer Arny Freytag shot it at various nightclubs in LA, NY and Miami. This comes in conjunction with Playboy’s revamp including a new editor reportedly from Maxim Magazine. Playboy hopes to enter into its next phase as the number one adult lifestyle publication in the world. DJ Keri's latest project Dream Keeper features breaks, trance, house & down-tempo, a little something for everyone.

Beyonce Knowles' upcoming film, ‘The Fighting Temptations’, sees her playing a nightclub singer who turns to gospel. The Destiny's Child singer has recorded a song for the soundtrack with Missy Elliott, MC Lyte and Free.

Sasha and Digweed are set to release a DVD documentary of their Delta Heavy Tour of America from 2002. The pair are executive producers on the project and are hoping to grab some free time in the near future so they can wade through the footage. The DVD is expected to be released in 2004 and is rumored to feature Digweed stage diving!

Deepest Blue have admitted that they spent way too much money on the video for their track ‘Deepest Blue’. The video involved throwing lots of blue and white paint onto canvas. The boys got a bit too carried away and ended up ruining all the equipment in the studio. This meant that the damages cost more that the actual video!

Remix genius Josh Wink has interpreted Sting’s next single ‘Send Your Love’ to help promote Stingalingding’s entry into the dance community. Wink has created a full vocal version and a more left minimal tech house version. In the past he has remixed the likes of Gus Gus, Ladytron, Lil’ Loius and Lenny Kravitz to name a few, not to mention his own productions including the seminal ‘Higher State of Consciousness’.

Erick Morillo says the P. Diddy collaboration on his forthcoming album is already tearing up dance floors in Ibiza. The DJ/producer is already spinning the track at his Pacha residency on the White Isle, and said “The P-Diddy track on my album is a scorcher, it's like a new sound, it's like a mixture of house, acid and tech, he does his old school chat and this other thing.” Look for it. Speaking of P. Diddy, when asked about rumors that he's not been paying his bar tabs at Pacha and Amnesia in Ibiza, he replied with a plausible explanation: "No, whenever I go on tour or abroad there's a lot of people around me, a lot of people who sit around me. So sometimes there may be a miscommunication, people trying to leech on or order drinks. But it's nothing that I can't pay for. If anyone feels that I owe them some money, call me up.”

Fatboy Slim is to remix The Rolling Stones classic ‘Sympathy For The Devil’. Apparently Mick Jagger and Keith Richards gave the go ahead because they liked Cook’s remix of ‘Satisfaction’.

Ibiza regular Paul Oakenfold, says he’s seen Hollywood star Tom Cruise clubbing on the White Isle. “I was in the toilets at Amnesia and this guy in a mask said, ‘I like your DJing.’ He took it off and it was Tom Cruise.”

DJ/producer, Cut La Roc, has set up a new record label called Rocstar Recordings with fellow producer Marco Distefano. La Roc, real name Lee Potter, cut his teeth at Skint, but is no longer linked with the label. He says his new imprint will be a very “broad based label”, releasing electronica, hip-hop, down-tempo, breakbeat, house as well as mainstream stuff. The debut outing is a triple tracker entitled ‘Many Styles Vol 1’ EP from La Roc himself.

Nick Warren has expressed his excitement at the prospect of the forthcoming Way Out West album. Nick, who is one half of the trancey breakbeaters from the UK, alongside Jody Wisternoff, recently commented that the album was nearly finished and that it was “probably our best work to date”.

Layo and Bushwacka are set to re-release last year’s acclaimed ‘Night Works’ album on Monday, August 18. The LP has reportedly sold 45,000 copies since its original release and has subsequently been deleted. The new re-packaged version will include their ‘Love Story/Finally’ bootleg, which went Top 10 earlier this year when it finally got a commercial release in Europe. A new single ‘It’s Up To You (Shining Through)’ is slated for an August release, the new version contains a vocal and remixes from Lee Cabrerra and Roni Size.

Richie Hawtin will be releasing a new album - ‘Closer’ - under his Plastikman guise on Monday, October 20. Expect some truly messed up sounds!

Gatecrasher, the UK super club, have just announced plans to completely reinvent themselves, becoming a venue and ‘ lifestyle club brand’, rather than simply a club night. Gatecrasher’s home, a venue called Republic in Sheffield, England, will be renamed Gatecrasher One. The newly renamed venue will have a $2.3 million transformation into what Gatecrasher is calling ‘the forerunner and blueprint of clubbing for the future.’ On the musical front, there will be a different musical theme for every night, including disco, hip-hop, fusions, house, electroclash, garage and R&B.

Royksopp has remixed Coldplay’s single ‘Clocks’. A limited edition 12-inch of the track was released in July, with only about 2,000 copies available worldwide. It also includse the B-side ‘God Put A Smile Upon Your Face’ featuring Mr. Thing of Scratch Perverts fame. One hundred copies were available through the band’s official website though sure to be gone by now.

Watch for part 2 coming soon!
