Top Ten Eighties Gone House - October 12th, 2002
By Dj Phace
1. Anaconda - I Need A Hero (Jan Wayne Mix)
This song became popular after the release of
Footloose, which carried the tune by Bonnie Tyler, "Holding Out For A
Hero." The Remix of this is very house and fast with 140BPMs. This
track is worth looking into. It is interesting and one of my
favorites.
2. Jan Wayne - Because the Night (Wheely Remix)
"Because The Night" was made popular by Ten-Thousand Maniacs's version of it on the MTV Unplugged Album. "Because the Night" was a very popular song for the Adult Contemporary crowd. The original that I found was done by Bruce Springsteen between the
years of 1978 - 1985.
3. Intonation/Joee - Died in Your Arms Tonight (Club Mix)
"Died in Your Arms Tonight" became popular in 1986 by Cutting Crew.
This mix stays
true to the original, but is sped up, and with added synthesizers it really keeps an 80's house mix feeling.
4. MadHouse - Like A Prayer (Main Mix)
This was originally released by Madonna on her 1989 album "Like a Prayer." I've found that this remix is actually starting to show up on top tens around Europe. The remix is not sang by Madonna, and it's definitely sped up a lot with a jungle beat (Bongos, I believe) and house rhythm mixed in.
a. MadHouse - Holiday
This is also a Madonna remix from her 1987
album, "You Can Dance." What happened here
is MadHouse figured that they could use the same jungle beats and the
same house rhythm mix that they used for another Madonna song just
using the appropriate times for breaks.
5. Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Remix)
The original was released in 1983 and has been remixed many times, Marilyn Manson did one mix, and I know there are a few floating around on some Hard House albums. KDWB had a remix of this, which had a wonderful, loud, hard hitting bass line that I loved to crank on my car stereo. This one was found with this title. I couldn't really find exactly who did this mix.
a. Alex Butcher - Sweet Dreams (original mix)
This mix is trying to make this song techno; however, they used Jonah
Bervoets - Sssst... (Listen) (Be Quiet) part over and over again, but
it's so minimal that you don't notice. This is a great Hard House
with great build ups and Hard Beats. I definitely recommend this one.
6. Prince - When Doves Cry (Fatboy Slim Remix)
This was originally released on the 1984 soundtrack of Purple Rain.
There are a few more mixes of this song out there, like Marilyn Manson to "Sweet Dreams," there was Genuwine for "When Doves Cry," which I enjoyed.
This song stays true to the original but is sped up a great deal with house beats. This mix keeps the original vocals. The title is how I found it, and if it has any affiliation to Fatboy Slim or it's on one of his albums, I have no idea.
a. Space Cowboy - I would Die 4 U
This is a song that Prince made popular off the same album, Purple Rain, which was remixed by
Space Cowboy. The beat doesn't really keep true to the original song, but has the same lyrics. The remix adds a fair amount of Space effects and almost a 70s House feeling. Overall it is good and worth checking out.
7. Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Coffee Remix)
Well, I never thought I would find a remix of this, but I did, and it
is interesting. I know it was released in 1979, but it was very popular in the eighties. I was shocked that someone would actually remix it.
What was done is that they increased the BPM's and added a high hat, with a drum beat and remixed the lyrics a bit. It's interesting to listen to, not sure if you would want to play this at a club, maybe in the beginning of the night when people are just starting to get in the mood to dance.
8. Eva Luna - Tell Me Lies (Sylver Remix)
This is a very good progressive trance remix of
Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies" from their 1987 album Tango in the
Night. It carries a new singer, with the same lyrics but has a fair amount of build ups and a lot of synthesizers while the song is at its break points. The best example I can think of this is that I feel like I'm listening to a Dj Encore remix. This is another one would recommend finding.
9. Tiga & Zyntherius - Sunglasses at Night (Jason Parker Rmx)
This Mix of "Sunglasses at Night" came from the song made popular by
Corey Heart in 1984 off of his first album,"First Offense." This remix is just putting a beat behind the original song, not very hard to do at all. But, it works well here. The one thing that bothered me is that I thought I would have found more and better remixes of this song since raves tend to populate with
people who wear their sunglasses at night.
10. Nova Space - Time after Time (Techno Remix)
Time After Time was originally sang by Cyndi
Lauper, the girl that just wants to have fun. It is off of her 1984 album "She's So Unusual" which actually carried the ever popular "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" as well. Nova Space had their own singer and completely redid the beat, giving it sort of gave an upbeat R&B feeling. If you were to find this song you would probably find it how it's listed above.
